Others expect the rate to be kept unchanged.
Statistics South Africa published the December consumer price inflation (CPI) data today, which showed that headline consumer price inflation slowed to 3.1% year-on-year in December from 3.2% in November.
The current inflation rate falls at the lower end of the Sarb’s target range of between 3% and 6%.
According to Stats SA, inflation for 2020 was the lowest in 16 years and the second lowest in 51 years.
As a result of the ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages from retail outlets, restaurants, bars and hotels, the monthly changes in these indices will be imputed using the headline change in the CPI for January.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged that the first two weeks of 2021 have been difficult for all South Africans, but says he is confident that the country is better prepared for the pandemic and possible future surges.
Writing in his weekly letter to the country, Ramaphosa said that the coronavirus pandemic has worsened, with new infections increasing far quicker than before. Hospitals, as a result, have come under severe strain as more people have needed medical attention.
“While most economic sectors have been able to operate again for several months, it will take some time for the economy to recover and for lost jobs to be restored,” he said.

South African state-owned power producer Eskom to implement Stage 2 loadshedding from midday today until 23:00 following overnight generation capacity loss.
Eskom spokesperson Sikhonathi Mantshantsha said this bout of loadshedding would go on until Sunday.
“Eskom would like to inform the public that Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented starting at 12:00 this afternoon through to Sunday night. The loadshedding is necessary due to loss of generation capacity overnight. Loadshedding is also required to manage the use of the emergency reserves, which will help us contain the stage of loadshedding required. The system remains vulnerable and unpredictable, should any further breakdowns occur, the stage of loadshedding may change at short notice,” said Mantshantsha.
