Study maps SARS-CoV-2 infected brains

Study maps SARS-CoV-2 infected brains Researchers in the United States and Canada have mapped the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the brains of people who died from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).   Geidy Serrano from Banner Sun Health Research Institute in Sun City, Arizona and colleagues found that infection with SARS-CoV-2 can result in acute neuropathology. The findings supported other studies suggesting that neurological signs and symptoms are not generally the result of direct viral invasion of the brain. Rather, they appear to be linked to systemic reactions such as coagulopathy, autoimmune responses, organ failure and sepsis. The team says much remains to be understood, including the interactions between viruses and hosts that influence brain invasion and whether the virus is cleared from the brain following acute illness.

Here s what I learned Gerald Wood, Opinion contributor © Courtesy of Sean Warren Gerard and Linda Wood My wife Linda, 78, passed peacefully in 2019, after an 11-year journey with Alzheimer’s disease amply repurposed our lives. Linda was adopted at birth, so our first clue of potential dementia risk surfaced following a successful search for her birth family when she was in her mid-50s. Her birth mother’s demise at 66 was attributed to early onset Alzheimer’s, preceded in death by both parents in the same Illinois state hospital where dementia care was provided.
