DETROIT (AP) Davis Thompson, in his third PGA Tour event as a professional, is leading the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
He s not excited about that fact. Yet.
“Sounds good on Sunday, Thompson said after matching a Detroit Golf Club record with a 9-under 63 to take the early first-round lead. “It’s only Thursday. I know I’ve got a long way to go.
I didn t know him personally very at all, said the 38-year-old after finishing the first round Thursday. I just knew he kind of meant a lot to Metro Detroit golf community, and I just thought it would be a nice thing to do and just kind of honor his memory.
Once Stuard teed off, however, things didn t go as well.
He shot a 1-under-par 71, eight shots off clubhouse leader Davis Thompson. He opened with a birdie on No. 1 then birdied on the seventh and 14th holes. He also had two bogeys, on Nos. 10 and 18. It was a performance far from his opening round in 2019. Two years ago, he finished the first round with a 6-under 66. He finished that tournament tied for fifth with a 17-under 271. Still, Stuard wasn t deterred.
He’s not excited about that fact. Yet.
âSounds good on Sunday,” Thompson said after matching a Detroit Golf Club record with a 9-under 63 to take the early first-round lead. âItâs only Thursday. I know Iâve got a long way to go.”
Brandon Hagy, Tom Lewis and Joaquin Niemann were two shots back. Seamus Power and J.J. Spaun shot 66, putting them another stroke behind the surprising leader.
Thompson is in the field as a sponsor exemption after sending an email to tournament officials, asking for a spot. The 22-year-old former University of Georgia star missed the cut last week at the Travelers Championship after tying for 35th in his pro debut at the Palmetto Championship earlier in June.
We are going back to the well with selecting the best player on Thursday to win for us on Friday. This strategy has worked for us at a decent clip this season and I expect that to continue in the second round. Tomorrow, our selection lies with the big Swede, Norlander, who has been striking the ball beautifully over the last couple of weeks.
He finished inside the top-25 at the Palmetto Championship and made the cut last week at the Travelers Championship. Clearly trending in a nice direction, I expect Norlander to make his way into the weekend in Detroit. First, he’ll need another solid round, after posting 4-under in the first-round. Norlander gained strokes in all four major statistical categories on Thursday and should do something similar on Friday.
