Health care workers have been on the very front of the COVID-19 frontlines. Theyâve put in longer hours, held the hands of patients suffering and â in some cases dying from â a debilitating respiratory illness; and separated themselves from friends and family so as to not put their loved ones at risk.
Doctors, nurses, CNAs, physicians assistants, radiologists, hospital techs, assisted living and nursing home staff, school nurses, and more. From the hospital president to a clinic janitor, health care workers have been among Americaâs heroes during 2020. Working to fight the COVID-19 pandemic with nearly everything they have.
Here are just a few of their stories from this year:
âIt affects everybody on every level,â said Brandy Wallar, director of New Visions Homeless Services.
Demand is greater, yet the shelter has to limit numbers to allow for social distancing, she said. As of early December, the shelterâs 64 beds were full, and additional men were using its overflow area.
âWe try to keep overflow at 30,â which is less than it often was before the pandemic, she said.
The number of people using the shelterâs food pantry is three times the usual level, Wallar said.
âLast month alone, 10,534 community members went through our drive-thru pantry,â she said.
New Visions held a large food giveaway on Oct. 29 at the Mid-America Center, Wallar said. The organization may try to do that again.
