Father Joe Carroll might not get his final wish, if the hundreds of people attending his funeral mass Tuesday in San Diego have any say in the matter.
Carroll, who died July 10 after devoting four decades to helping the homeless, asked to be described on his gravestone as “a good priest.” But that wouldn’t be accurate, Monsignor Terrance Fleming said during the eulogy at Saint Rita Catholic Church in Valencia Park.
“It should say ‘a great priest,’” Fleming said. “Don’t you agree?”
The audience applauded.

Fleming, a priest from Los Angeles, wasn’t really trying to upend his longtime friend’s plan for a simple marker. He was making a larger point about the impact Carroll had in San Diego by turning a small downtown thrift-store into a network of shelters, food kitchens, health clinics and schools that assists thousands of people annually.
