In a news release, the university said the initial doses will be given to health care workers, including clinic staff, at the UAB Hospital, along with other hospitals in Jefferson County and with Emergency Medical Services workers in the seven-county region. UAB will be the only location in the county to receive the vaccine because it has access to several minus-80 degree freezers needed to store the vaccine, according to the release.

UAB offers new, less invasive laser surgery for epilepsy

LITT surgery, using heat generated by a laser, offers less side effects and a shorter hospital stay compared to traditional epilepsy surgery. It is called LITT, or laser interstitial thermal therapy. It is a new procedure for some types of epilepsy, using a laser to remove brain tissue that is causing seizures. In Alabama, it is available only at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Children’s of Alabama.   “In the short time we’ve been performing the LITT procedure, we’ve found it can reduce the number of open brain surgeries for epilepsy surgeries where we have to remove part of the skull,” said Kristen Riley, M.D., professor in the Department of Neurosurgery. “LITT uses a laser beam directed through a pencil eraser-sized incision in the skull. For those cases where it is appropriate, LITT is less invasive, with fewer side effects and a shorter hospital stay.”

An opinion writer argued Jill Biden should drop the Dr (Few were swayed

In an opinion piece published online Friday, the author, Joseph Epstein, addressed the president-elect’s wife as “kiddo” and offered her advice on “what may seem like a small but I think is a not unimportant matter.” “Any chance you might drop the ‘Dr.’ before your name?” he wrote. “‘Dr. Jill Biden’ sounds and feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic.”
