A sectoral analysis from 2019 found students owed universities almost R10-billion, calculated after the Department of Higher Education and Training had paid almost R1-billion to settle debts incurred by more than 50,000 students funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Students have called for this debt to be waived or put on ice. At the University of Cape Town (UCT), more than 1,600 students owe R88-million.
