The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of a few schools that held in-person classes this fall now being singled out for some praise after largely mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
At Illinois, students and staff entered buildings by showing an innovative phone app documenting a recent negative test. The school’s positivity rate spiked to 3% in late August but stayed well below 1% the remainder of the fall while classes were split between in-person and online.
“As an instructor, if I wanted to get into my classroom, I’d need to show the code, which shows a negative test result,” Mr. Ivanov said.

While the public anxiously awaits widespread availability of coronavirus vaccines, employers view the rollout with some trepidation.
The arrival of vaccines presents companies with a thorny dilemma: whether or not to require that employees get vaccinated before returning to the workplace.
Either choice carries risk. While a mandate could help companies more quickly resume business as usual, it also could expose them to lawsuits from employees who object to the vaccine for various reasons or those who have adverse reactions to the shot. On the other hand, employers that don t have a mandate could be liable in the case of a workplace outbreak.

Moraine Valley Community College alumnus Mike La Mantia, of Chicago s Mount Greenwood neighborhood, was one of the top scorers in Illinois for the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel certification exam, qualifying him for the Microsoft Office Specialist U.S. National Championship in June 2021.
La Mantia took a Microsoft Excel class in fall 2019 with Carol Boyle, Moraine Valley professor of Office Technology and certification testing coordinator. When he sat for the certification exam, a requirement for the class, he performed advanced Excel tasks. Top exam scorers in each state are invited to the national tournament, which was canceled in June due to the pandemic but rescheduled for June 2021. La Mantia earned a near-perfect score. He transferred to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he is studying finance and agribusiness.
