Johnson County begins the distribution of coronavirus vaccines to those who qualify under the state’s Phase 1B plan today.
The County Health Department announced that residents 65 and older will receive their vaccine from their University of Iowa Health Care or Mercy Iowa City provider. According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, those providers will call or email qualified patients to schedule the vaccine appointment. Patients are being asked not to contact their providers regarding the vaccine.
University of Iowa Health Care officials announced last week that existing patients can express interest in getting a vaccine using the online MyChart or by registering through a web portal.

IOWA CITY - University of Iowa Health Care finally has an answer to the often asked patient question about when they ll be able to get a COVID-19 vaccine.
Since March, 4,500 Iowans have died from COVID-19, according to data from the Iowa Department of Public Health.
State data shows that Iowa added eight confirmed deaths over the past 24 hours ending at 11 a.m. Wednesday, resulting in a grim new milestone.
COVID-19 is listed as an underlying cause in 4,103 of those deaths, according to the data, while the virus is listed as a contributing factor in the remaining 397 deaths.
More than half 59 percent of those who have died were adults 80 years of age or older, according to the data, while individuals between the ages of 70 and 70 accounted for 21 percent of the deaths.
