Santa Fe Trail s 200 years of travel

Copyright © 2021 Albuquerque Journal PUERTOCITO DE LA PIEDRA LUMBRE – That’s a lot of name for a next-to-nothing place on N.M. 283 just west of I-25 and south of Las Vegas. But according to the historical markers here, there’s more to it than is apparent. This is where the storied Santa Fe Trail, a major commercial road running about 900 miles from Missouri to New Mexico, was born nearly 200 years ago. Visitors to Fort Union National Monument, near Watrous, see the remnants of fort walls and ruts made by wagon traffic on the Santa Fe Trail. Fort Union was established in 1851 near the junction of the trail’s Mountain and Cimarron cutoff routes. (Eddie Moore/Albuquerque Journal)

Lobos Drop Doubleheader to Air Force

USAFA, Colo.  Despite posting 16 runs on 22 hits through two games, The University of New Mexico baseball team was edged out twice by Air Force in a doubleheader on Saturday. In game one, the Lobos (9-22, 6-14 MW) kept it close with the Falcons (19-18, 11-12) and led the game through two innings before dropping 4-6. The Lobos played catchup in game two but made it a three-run game in the ninth inning, but the comeback was not enough as they fell 12-15. “In game one, our defense killed us,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “Then, in game two, our pitching was poor.”

Lobos Head to Colorado Springs for Three-Game Series Versus Air Force ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  This week, the University of New Mexico baseball team is back on the road to face off with the Air Force Falcons in Colorado Springs, Colo. It hasn’t been the smoothest season for the team, as they have been back in action for just two weeks after a pause in the season due to a positive COVID test within the team. The three-game series will start with a doubleheader on Saturday at 10 a.m. MT, and conclude with one game on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.

Lobos Push No 8 A&M But Fall 4-1

by Frank Mercogliano COLLEGE STATION, Texas The University of New Mexico refused to go quietly into the night.  The Lobos didn’t survive, but the served notice that they were in the NCAA Tournament for a reason, and the squad gave the No. 8 team in the nation all it could handle.  The Lobos picked up their first NCAA Tournament point since 1998 and stayed right with the No. 8 Texas A&M Aggies before falling 4-1.  UNM ended its season at 8-10 overall, and the squad went 0-6 against nationally-ranked opponents. The Lobos had their moments against Texas A&M, and weren’t all that far from a total shocker.  Well a shocker to the rest of the tennis world, but for UNM, which lost 4-3 to a pair of ranked opponents and 4-2 to three others with all five of those potentially wins for UNM, it would have been a little justification.
