FEC quietly finds consensus despite hush-money dispute

(Sarah Silbiger/CQ Roll Call) The Federal Election Commission is back in the spotlight after Republican commissioners voted to close an investigation into whether former President Donald Trump violated election law by making hush-money payments during the 2016 election. Campaign finance watchdogs panned the decision which went against the advice of the FEC’s top lawyer saying it reaffirms the agency’s inability to enforce the law. The six-member FEC cannot have more than three members from the same political party, and it needs four affirmative votes to move forward with an investigation. Republican commissioners have often voted to close inquiries into alleged campaign finance violations.
