JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Dr. Bhagyashri Navalkele became the first employee at the University of Mississippi Medical Center to take the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
The director of infection prevention at the university hospital volunteered after seeing first-hand the impacts of the virus, and is urging other front-line workers at UMMC also to roll up their sleeves.

Children and adolescents in Mississippi who tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus were more likely to report close contact with someone with confirmed COVID-19 and less likely to report consistent mask use at school, according to a study released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, children who attended school or child care in person during the two weeks before the test were not more likely to test positive for the virus, based on testing Sept.1 to Nov. 5 at outpatient centers and emergency departments associated with the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs and State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers were among the first in the state to receive a recently approved COVID-19 vaccine, receiving the shots during a news conference Monday.
Dobbs, Byers and other health officials were given pharmaceutical company Pfizer s vaccine, which already is being distributed to hundreds of providers across the state. It s a big day, Dobbs said. We are extremely excited to have a vaccine that is not only extremely effective based on the clinical studies, but also seems to have a very favorable side-effect profile. We know how deadly, devastating and disruptive coronavirus has been for the state of Mississippi.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Mississippi’s first shipment of coronavirus vaccine arrived Monday, doses that will be administered to the state’s health care professionals working on the frontlines of the pandemic.
Mississippi received an initial batch of 25,000 doses of the vaccine developed by Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech, which are already being distributed to hospitals, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said during a virtual briefing with reporters.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The COVID-19 vaccine distribution is officially underway in Mississippi. State health leaders were the first to receive the vaccinations this afternoon.
State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs was the first person in the state of Mississippi to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. “Felt like a butterfly,” said Dobbs. “A little bit of a sting. not bad.”
The first five to receive the vaccine in the state were Dobbs, State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers, MSDH Health Protection Director and Senior Deputy Jim Craig, Community Health Center Association of Mississippi RN Sonja Fugua and Dr. Leandro Mena, University of Mississippi Medical Center Professor of Population Science and Professor of Medicine.
