Menthol cigarettes contributed to 378,000 premature deaths in the United States between 1980 to 2018, according to a new study.
The research also shows that about 10 million smokers were attributable to menthol cigarettes, which researchers estimate accounted for about 3 million life years lost.
“Our results indicate that mentholated tobacco products have had a significant impact on public health and could continue to pose a substantial health risk,” says David Mendez, an associate professor in the health management and policy department at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
“We hope these data will help the Food and Drug Administration evaluate the potential regulatory actions for mentholated tobacco products.”

Michigan Republicans, hostile to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer throughout the crisis, are now asking the state s attorney general to investigate how the Democrat coped with that challenge.
Republicans say people died unnecessarily because of Whitmer s order that nursing homes readmit residents who had the coronavirus if the facilities had capacity and quarantine capabilities. Michigan s fatality rate was lower than the national average, and many of those on the pandemic s front line dispute the assertions.

Former Pittsburgher Susan Schulman, a New York-based literary agent, represented the estate of Walter Tevis, author of the 1983 novel of the same name that was the basis for the Netflix show, which has nominations for best limited series and best actress in a limited series for star Anya Taylor-Joy.
Schulman taught English literature at Ohio University before moving to New York, becoming a literary agent and eventually founding her own agency. She said most books that are optioned by film and TV producers don’t make it to the screen.
