MICHEL MARTIN, HOST: Not much is known about the first Black samurai in feudal Japan. And spoiler alert here, he apparently did exist. And he s now the center of a new anime series on Netflix that introduces his story to an American audience. It s called Yasuke. And as NPR s Andrew Limbong reports, it takes a fantastic approach to history.

After years of legal wrangling, Maryland reached a $577 million settlement to end a 15-year-old federal lawsuit that accused the state of providing inequitable resources to its four historically Black colleges and universities.

Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh (D) announced Wednesday morning that he had settled the case. This settlement marks an historic investment in Maryland s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It will enable these valued institutions to expand their academic reach and to assist thousands of students with getting the education they deserve, Frosh said in a statement.

The General Assembly moved quickly this year to pass a bill that would require the state to direct $577 million to Maryland s HBCUs over the next decade, contingent on a final settlement agreement in the federal court case by June 1.

Aya Daisey
Aya’s father Blaine hung over the fence watching his twin daughters, now seniors, compete in a track meet. Blaine was a Cape school record holder in the long jump with a distance of 22-feet-10-inches, ran a sub-11-second 100 meters and was the winner of the Kevin Kennedy Award in 1983. Aya is a cross-fit sprinter in the pool and on the track. Like most sprinters, she can jump far when she is motivated. In the April 27 meet, Aya won the long jump in 15-feet-5-inches, edging out her sister Amaya, who jumped 15-2. Aya was first in the 200 meters with a time of 27.4 seconds, then won the high jump in 4-feet-6-inches, where she owns a personal best of 5-feet. And in the 4-by-100, Aya took the baton on the anchor leg to lead the team of Mehkia Applewhite, Kiki Johnson and Amaya Daisey to a come-from-behind win in 55.8.
