Black History Month: UMES, A look back

47abc February 5, 2021 Little did the town know, it would be the beginning of an educational powerhouse on the shore. “It started with 2 or 3 teachers and about 13 students right here on this land, not in this particular place we are right now but in a stretch of land that is now over 1,000 acres,” said Dr. James White, UMES Alumni and president of the National Alumni Association for UMES. That small assembly of the school’s population would grow, first joining the University system of Maryland, and then eventually re-branding as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1970. But before that new decade began, the world faced a massive civil rights movement, where African -American students at UMES would use their voices to be heard and seen as equal. That same fight continues even today.

This month, the lab began testing DSU’s athletic teams, and will soon begin processing tests for the whole student body. By mid-February, New Castle County hopes to purchase testing capacity from the new facility, as do Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, both prominent Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The Senate’s “Recovery Now” plan runs a wide gamut of priorities: sending millions to food banks and fire departments; wiping out utility and rental debt for a few thousand families; awarding grants for businesses, artists and nonprofits; paying $1,000 to tens of thousands of people stuck in limbo in the unemployment system; restoring buses and trains to pre-pandemic service levels; and funding “wellmobiles” to administer doses of the coronavirus vaccine, Pamela Wood of the Sun reports.

Natural Gas Line For Somerset Co Wins Approval

The Maryland Board of Public Works has granted final approval for a tidal wetlands license that would bring natural gas to Somerset County, a utility service local elected officials have been seeking to bring to area for years. “We are pleased with the unanimous decision by the Maryland Board of Public Works to grant the final tidal wetlands license needed to extend natural gas to Somerset County, one of only three counties in Maryland without access to natural gas,” Chesapeake Utilities Spokesman Justin Mulcahy said. “This approval will enable University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) to greatly reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions to improve local air quality.”
