Metformin may affect risk of breast cancer in women with type 2 diabetes

E-Mail A study of 44,541 women has found that there appears to be no association between type 2 diabetes and developing breast cancer overall. This may be because most women in the study with type 2 diabetes were taking metformin, a medication widely used to treat type 2 diabetes, whose actions may help to reduce the risk of developing oestrogen positive (ER-positive) breast cancer. ER-positive breast cancer (cancer that has receptors on cell surfaces for the hormone oestrogen) accounts for about 80% of breast cancer diagnosed in the USA. Associations uncovered in the study suggested that the link between type 2 diabetes and breast cancer varied by breast cancer subtype and was affected by the use of metformin to treat diabetes. The study is published in the leading cancer journal

Epilepsy or Not?

A blood test differentiated epileptic from psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), a small study suggested. Four immune response associated proteins TRAIL, ICAM-1, MCP-2, and TNF-R1 distinguished PNES from epileptic seizures with sensitivity of 82.6% (95% CI 62.9-93.0) and specificity of 91.6% (95% CI 74.2-97.7) when analyzed in a diagnostic algorithm, reported Peter Crino, MD, PhD, of University of Maryland in Baltimore, and co-authors. Expanding the algorithm to include previously identified PNES risk factors boosted sensitivity to 91.3% (95% CI 73.2-97.6) and specificity to 95.8% (95% CI 79.8-99.3). These four plasma proteins could provide a rapid, cost-effective, and accurate blood-based diagnostic test to confirm recent epileptic seizures or PNES, the researchers wrote in

I Swallowed a Moon Made of Iron pays poetic tribute to exploited workers

by Charlie Smith on January 27th, 2021 at 7:13 AM 1 of 3 2 of 3 Most people don’t think much about how their electronic devices are created. Somewhere in a factory in a faraway land, a worker is toiling to create a cellphone, a laptop, or a television set. But every once in a while, something dramatic occurs to force this issue into the consciousness of people living in the West. Like in 2010, when there were 10 suicide deaths at Foxconn’s operations in Shenzhen in China’s Guangdong province. Nearly every one of them threw themselves off a building, generating media coverage around the world.
