The University of Central Lancashire has announced the first 15 people to take part in its new Journalism Innovation and Leadership Programme, supported by the Google News Initiative.
The 30-week, part-time, postgraduate course has been designed by a team of academics and industry leaders, with the intention of fostering the next generation of diverse news media leaders and innovators.
The class of 2021 live in Australia, England, Fiji, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Sweden and Zimbabwe. They work for public broadcasters, magazines, newspapers, news agencies, digital native outlets, and other news-related organisations.
“Though their personal contexts and professional challenges might at first appear very different, there is much the cohort have in common,” said Dr François Nel, Reader in Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UCLan and director of the scholarship programme.

Ron Atkins, the UK s longest living former MP, has died aged 104.
The Labour politician twice represented Preston North in Lancashire from 1966 to 1970 and again from 1974 to 1979.
Mr Atkins, who later served as a Preston councillor until he was 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Avenham, Preston.
Elizabeth Atkins added that her husband had devoted his life to the Labour Party and was driven by making the world better .
She said he would be remembered for bringing a polytechnic - now the University of Central Lancashire - to Preston instead of Blackburn, and for saving the Preston-Ormskirk railway line.

British-Pakistani Becomes Youngest Member of Opposition in House of Lords
The Co-founder and National Coordinator of Labour Friends of Kashmir, Wajid Khan, has been appointed as a Member of the British House of Lords.
The British citizen of Pakistani origin is the youngest member of the Opposition in the House of Lords elected from Burnley, Lancashire.

He was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the North West England (European Constituency) from 2017 to 2019 and has served in Britain’s Foreign Affairs Committee and Human Rights Committee.
Khan, who has his roots in Kharian tehsil of district Gujrat, Pakistan, is known to be vocal on issues like fracking, climate change, gender equality, and human rights violations in Kashmir.
