WCU among 15 UNC System schools to receive freezers for COVID-19 vaccine storage

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – All 15 research institutions within the University of North Carolina System will soon be receiving 61 new freezers capable of safely storing COVID-19 vaccines at temperatures as low as -80 Celsius (-112 Fahrenheit). The freezers will support state and local public health agencies, hospitals, and pharmacies with the critical logistics of sub-zero storage and subsequent distribution of COVID-19 vaccines that started arriving in North Carolina this past week. Vaccines stored at UNC institutions will be distributed according to the State’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan at the direction of state and local public health officials.

The road in front of the Concord Police Department headquarters was packed Friday evening as the community waited for the candlelight vigil to start in memory of Jason Shuping.
Children and other attendees had taken the provided chalk to write messages to the Shuping family and the police department. One message was written by a fellow University of North Carolina at Pembroke graduate, a school Officer Shuping had attended. The message read: Once a #Brave, always a #UNCP Brave.

Shock, anger and sadness are sweeping over the community with the death of Officer Jason Shuping, who was killed in the line of duty Wednesday night in Concord.
City officials announced Thursday afternoon that a candlelight vigil will be held tonight in Shuping s honor. More details about the vigil will be released this morning.Â
A procession from the Charlotte Medical Examiner s Office to Powles Funeral Home in Rockwell began around 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17.
Shuping joined CPD in 2019 and served as an officer for a year and a half. He died at the age of 25.
Shuping was from Salisbury and graduated from East Rowan High School in 2014. He also attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he was a former track team member.
