Our Alien-Haunted World -- The Science and Saga of Oumuamua

On September 6th 2017 astronomers at Hawaii’s PanStarr Observatory detected an object hurtling in from deep space, from the direction of Vega, a star 25 light-years away. The mystery object crossed the orbital plane of the solar system, within which the Earth and the other planets revolve around the sun where it was captured by our star’s gravitation. The elongated object accelerated to around 200,000 mph as it made its closest approach to the Sun on September 9th, launching the story and plot of Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb’s book, Extraterrestrial, and the spell-binding saga of “Oumuamua” in which he attempts to make a case that the interstellar object passing through our solar system could have been a piece of alien technology.

Asteroid Apophis, named after God of Choas, to potentially impact Earth

An asteroid named Apophis, after the ancient Egyptian god of chaos, is reportedly picking up speed as it is heading towards Earth. The space rock is set to visit us in March. Asteroid Apophis, also known as 99942 Apophis, was first discovered the asteroid in 2004 by researchers from the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy. They have been tracking it since then and predicted it will pass by Earth in 2068. It was initially believed the asteroid posed no threat to Earth. But that’s about to change. Asteroid Apophis: What you need to know No flyby in 2020 Experts and researchers with a sly sense of humour are asking why Apophis didn’t show up in 2020. The year has been a trainwreck so far and an asteroid impact would have made for a nice season finale.
