Darwen: Macmillan honorary president and former Palladium Theatre performer celebrates 100th birthday

A DARWEN resident whose life has encompassed theatre, classical singing and serving as a nurse in the Second World War today celebrates her 100th birthday. Margaret Watson was born Margaret Prophet in Manchester in 1921 to Dorothy, a music hall cellist and Robert, a comedian. Even from a very early age the young Margaret imbibed her parents’ artistic sensibilities and studied singing under international soprano Isobel Baillie at the age of 15, however the Second World War would put her on a very different path. Son Roger said: “On the outbreak of war in 1939 she enrolled as a nurse and trained during the blitz, where despite braving parachute mines and rooftop-flying German bombers, she found herself nursing wounded Nazis in a ward guarded by an armed soldier.”
