Multicultural Student Affairs is preparing for its second year of virtual affinity-based ceremonies for graduating seniors within LGBTQ+ communities and communities of color.
This year is a continuation from last year’s programming, when MSA had to transition from in-person End-of-Year Celebrations to virtual ceremonies after the campus closed to students due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Virtual ceremonies will begin with the JubilAsian Senior Send-Off on May 28, followed by a June 3 Native American and Indigenous Community Celebration, which will also host a virtual watch party. On June 8, MSA will facilitate the Lavender Graduation, followed by The JOY: NU’s Black Congratulatory on June 9, Then, the two weeks of graduation celebrations will conclude with the Latinx Congratulatory on June 10.
The Black House is accepting tours for students in the class of 2021, with first-come, first-serve signups opening Monday.
The tours will occur June 7 in 30-minute intervals, and groups are limited to five students, according to the Multicultural Student Affairs website.
“We want to give the Class of 2021 the opportunity to see the renovated space before they graduate and leave campus,” a statement on the website read.
Attendees will also allow contact tracing and must complete the University symptom tracker in addition to requirements for masks and social distancing.
The tour comes after much anticipation from the campus community. The Black House initially closed for renovations in June 2019. On March 31, University President Morton Schapiro announced that the renovations were on track to be completed mid-Spring Quarter.
This year’s Sex Week is all about healing.
Members of the Northwestern community were welcome to attend a range of events as part of Sex Week 2021, including a Wednesday workshop on reconnecting with sexuality after trauma, and a sex story slam that will take place on Saturday.
Scholar and community organizer Da’Shaun Harrison gave a highly anticipated preview of their book, “The Belly of the Beast: The Politics of Anti-Fatness as Anti-Blackness,” which discusses racial biopolitics, on Thursday. The week’s committee also organized a virtual art gallery on sexual freedom in relation to healing and the pandemic.
Three weeks ago, my fellow Coptic-Egyptian friend, Weinberg freshman George Mousa, and I administered an anonymous survey to the Northwestern community via social media about Middle Eastern and North African students at the University to gather statistics before creating a petition to send to Multicultural Student Affairs. The petition urges for the creation of an MSA branch with its own content expert and graduate student expert dedicated to MENA students at the University.
The first question on the survey was “Do you know of any Middle Eastern or North African students at Northwestern?” Out of 67 respondents, 80 percent answered “Yes.”When asked, “In your opinion, are Middle Eastern and North African students a minority at Northwestern?” 81 percent of respondents answered “Yes.”
