STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Borough President James Oddo pulled his appointee off a New York City education panel after it rejected a contract extension for the administration of the controversial Gifted & Talented exam earlier his week.
Peter Calandrella, who Oddo appointed in 2016, voted against the contract extension with Pearson Education during a Wednesday meeting of the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP).
The panel ultimately rejected the contract extension with the company that provides the Gifted & Talented admissions exams for approximately $1.7 million.
Oddo said he made the decision to fire Calandrella effective Feb. 9 not because of the substance of the vote, but because it went against what he, his staff, and Calandrella had agreed on the night before.
Decline In NYC Public School Enrollment Brings Budget Worries For Educators

The significant drop in enrollment in New York City public schools this year may affect student services and programs, as budgets are subject to state funding changes and school-level clawbacks where there are fewer-than-expected students.
The Department of Education said Wednesday that enrollment in New York City’s public schools this year has declined 4% with about 43,000 students leaving the system. The biggest decreases have been in early education, with 3K enrollment down 8% and pre-K enrollment down 13%. The drop in enrollment mirrors national trends, with the DOE citing the pandemic, declining birth rates, and overall long-term decreases in public school enrollment as factors.
