Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that Ahmad Saeed Omar Sheikh be released from prison and moved to a government “safe house”. The Pakistani-British man had been on death row for 18 years for his alleged role in the kidnapping and murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002 by Al Qaeda and Pakistani Islamist militants.
A three-judge Supreme Court bench directed authorities to release Sheikh and three co-defendants. Defense lawyers argued Sheikh was a scapegoat and sentenced on insufficient evidence. A day later, Pakistan’s government appealed to the court to review its decision. But the review panel on Tuesday stood by the Supreme Court ruling.

Islamabad [Pakistan], February 3 (ANI): PakistanSupreme Court on Wednesday took notice of Prime Minister Imran Khan s recent announcement to give Rs 500 million development funds to lawmakers ahead of the Senate elections.
According to a report by The Express Tribune, the two-judge bench comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Maqbool Baqar pointed out paragraph 52 of the SC s December 5, 2013 judgment, given during the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) tenure, regarding a premier s discretion to allot funds.
Justice Isa has issued notice to the Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan and advocate generals seeking a response on the matter.

A total of 36 members of the United States Congress on Tuesday issued a letter to Pakistan s Ambassador to the US, urging Islamabad to undertake a full review of acquittal of the accused in the case of 2002 killing of American journalist Daniel Pearl.
This comes after Pakistan s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered to shift British-born Al-Qaeda terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the main accused in the sensational kidnapping and murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002, from the death row cell to a rest house run by the government.
