JACKSONVILLE, Fla. As the population of Florida ages, along with it comes more senior drivers on the roadway.
From Dec. 7 - 11, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is recognizing Older Driver Safety Awareness Week. It s spearheaded by FDOT s Safe Mobility for Life Coalition, which hopes to use the week to inform Floridians about the different ways they can get where they need to go with or without a car.
FDOT says there are three main focuses for safe mobility:
Understand the impact aging has on driving
Be proactive as a driver, pedestrian, bicyclist or transit rider
FDOT: Drivers 65+ involved in less crashes, but suffer twice as many fatalities
As Florida motorists age, they’re involved in fewer crashes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – If you have an older parent, you might be familiar with the tough conversation on if they should still be driving. The Florida Department of Transportation says Florida leads the nation with 20% of its population 65 and older.
In less than a decade by 2030, 1 in 4 drivers throughout the state will be in this same age category.
As part of older driver safety awareness week; FDOT encourages drivers 65 and older to understand the impact aging has on commuting, be proactive about safe driving skills, and plan for a secure transition away from driving.
