(AP) As crawfish season begins, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is reminding people not to commit crawfish pollution. Don’t put crawfish shells or water left after boiling crawfish down storm drains, into ditches, or anywhere they could get into bodies of water, the department said in its February newsletter. “Dumping any seafood waste such as crawfish shells and boil water into a ditch, bayou, river, lake or other waterway can seriously harm or kill any resident aquatic species living there,” the article said.

Federal Grant Aims to Replace Plastic Throws in Louisiana In 2018 we were all horrified when city maintenance workers not only pulled 46 tons of Mardi Gras beads out of clogged storm drains in New Orleans, but also found a CAR hidden in the underground muck. And that was only in a five-block area on St Charles Avenue. The 93,000 lbs of plastic throws that were found led to a ban from city officials on throwing entire plastic bags of beads from floats in future parades. Since then, a huge recycling effort has garnered over 62 tons of plastic beads from storm drains throughout New Orleans.62 tons, y all.

Bradley Keith named new Director of BTNEP January 15, 2021 Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) and the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) announced the hiring of a new director. T. Bradley Keith will join the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program team as its new leader beginning late January. “I am extremely excited and honored to bring on board someone with T’s level of experience and knowledge. I look forward to supporting and working with T to ensure that BTNEP continues its great legacy as Louisiana’s estuary program. Under T’s professional leadership, we can look forward to continuing to honor LUMCON and BTNEP missions.” said Dr. Craig McClain, LUMCON Executive Director.
