Orleans Parish DA says he won’t prosecute simple drug cases By Natasha Robin | April 26, 2021 at 12:18 PM CDT - Updated April 26 at 12:19 PM NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams says his office will no longer prosecute simple drug possession charges. Williams testified Monday morning before the New Orleans Council’s Criminal Justice Committee. He says that’s because his goal is to increase safety and deliver justice. Williams says offenders of drug possession are often suffering from addiction and he believes those people need help, not jail time. “If we send them to our diversion program they will report within a month or so of that refusal to a diversion counselor who will assess all of their needs, whether that person has had any trauma, any underlying mental health.
