The long-awaited groundbreaking for the Couture apartment tower is moving closer based on new building permit filings, and a property sale.
Portions of the streets next to the downtown Milwaukee development site, 909 E. Michigan St., would close starting May 3 to accommodate construction.
That s according to building permit applications filed with the city Department of Neighborhood Services by Madison-based J.H. Findorff & Son Inc., the Couture s general contractor.
The plans call for temporarily closing one lane each of Michigan Street, Clybourn Street and Lincoln Memorial Drive next to the 2.2-acre site.
Meanwhile, a portion of the site has been sold by The Couture LLC to a pair of subsidiaries, Couture Parking LLC and Transit Hub Mke LLC, for $1.65 million, according to a new deed recorded on Friday.

In a heated meeting Wednesday, City Attorney Tearman Spencer defended one of his deputies who has come under fire for doing legal work while holding one of the top jobs in Milwaukee city government.
And Spencer fielded sharp criticism over his handling of a city contract for the Couture, a major and long-delayed downtown development.
Spencer s refusal to sign the contract could prompt a lawsuit from the developer and raises the need for the city to hire outside counsel, Ald. Nik Kovac said during a meeting of the Common Council s Finance and Personnel Committee Wednesday.
Spencer defended Deputy City Attorney Odalo Ohiku s outside work as a defense attorney, which included a four-day criminal jury trial last week at the Milwaukee County Courthouse.

He’s objecting to an amendment added by Alderman
Robert Bauman, and accepted by Barrett Lo, that would have the development team contribute $100,000 to the anti-displacement fund administered by MKE United, a city partnership with several non-profits. The fund helps fight gentrification by helping residents in the greater downtown area pay their property taxes.
