Firefighters have cut one person from their car wreck near Marton overnight.
Firefighters worked into the night to free a person trapped in their car after a serious crash near Marton. Emergency services were called to help two people following a single-car crash at the intersection of Pukepapa Rd and State Highway 3, Lake Alice at, 9.50pm on Wednesday. Marton’s volunteer fire brigade arrived to find one person was trapped in their vehicle after it had rolled in the “fairly nasty” crash, Fire and Emergency spokesman Carlos Dempsey said. The other person was out of the vehicle.
As the blaze grew the mother rushed back inside to save their dog and a few items, but with smoke and flames filling the home the risks were high, he said. Two men from next-door rushed to help her, smashing windows help her escape as the inferno took hold, Churchouse said. He commended the young men for their bravery entering a home to help the woman, but urged people to think before running into a burning building. “Definitely the smoke alarms saved them. They had to crawl out and had smoke all over their faces.”
