USD 250 announces new Launch program community partnerships director

PITTSBURG, Kan. In a combined effort between Pittsburg Community Schools (USD 250) and the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the local school district announced a new partnership Friday with Mindy Cloninger, who will serve as the new director of community partnerships for its Launch pathways program.
Launch pathways are the specific career pathways students have to choose from at Pittsburg High School and Pittsburg Community Middle School, including business and entrepreneurship, science and engineering, construction trades and management, culinary and hospitality, education, health careers, and information (computer) technology.

Salina Public Schools has selected Tracy Hutton as the Virtual School Principal effective July 1, 2021.
An educator with 21 years of experience, of which the past 14 were at USD 305, Hutton most recently served for five years as career and life planning teacher at Lakewood Middle School. While at Lakewood she was a member of the Restorative Discipline Leadership Team. Prior to that she worked for nine years as a district curriculum technologist, focusing on K-12 technology leadership, staff development, and instructional strategies.
The new virtual school is being created to address the interest in online learning which surfaced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some students found success in a flexible, virtual classroom and wish to continue this style of learning. Some families prefer virtual learning in light of the global pandemic.

Scientists at the Kansas Polymer Research Center have invented a new kind of battery that is more eco-friendly.
While that’s good news, equally good news is that they invented it by transforming a product that is plentiful in the heartland: soy. Or rather, crop residue after soybeans have been harvested.
“We’re using the stems, the leaves, the shells things that would otherwise have no commercial value to produce activated carbon material and suddenly that has tremendous value,” said Associate Professor of Chemistry

Garrett (Gary) R Haddock, age 74 of Columbus, KS., passed away at 5:30 am on Monday, April 5, 2021 at Good Samaritan Facility in Hospice care in Olathe, KS. Gary was born on November 13, 1946 to Lavern and Adele (Schallert) Haddock in Pierce City, MO. He graduated from Pierce City High School in 1964 and went on to graduate from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS., with a Masters degree. He served in the US Army from May 1970 through December 1971 and was in Vietnam from January, 1971 through December, 1971 as a SP4. He received The Bronze Star while serving in Vietnam.
