BV Heritage Museum receives donations

The Buena Vista Heritage Museum took in substantial donations from the Lettucehead Food Company and the Arkansas Valley Car Club in 2020. Lettucehead, the specialty grocery store whose own name and logo hearkens back to the Buena Vista area’s history of growing Buena-kist lettuce, donated $2,000 to Buena Vista Heritage, according to a press release. The Lettucehead emblem is from the Buena Vista Heritage collection.  “Tom Liverman, the owner, has been a supporter of Buena Vista Heritage for many years,” the release said. A $1,503 donation from the Arkansas Valley Car Club to Buena Vista  Heritage’s courthouse museum will be used to “create new exhibits highlighting transportation in the Arkansas Valley explicitly dealing with automobiles.”

George Barnett

George Washington Barnett, Jr. died of lymphoma Jan. 16 in Salida. George was born in Minturn on July 5, 1934, to Mae (Wyatt) and George Barnett, Sr. He had one sister, Anna Mae, who preceded him in death. At the time of George’s birth, his father was a miner at Gilman. George grew up around his extended family, which had moved west to Colorado from Appalachia. George graduated from Rifle Union High School. He served in the U.S. Army. George was a telegrapher for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, working at stations throughout Colorado and Eastern Utah. He attended Mesa Junior College in Grand Junction, eventually graduating from the University of Colorado. Later, he earned a Masters degree from the University of Denver.

La Vista plans Friday groundbreaking on E Main

A new mixed-use development at the corner of East Main Street and South Court Street in Buena Vista will host a ground-breaking ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday. La Vista, the development which has previously been known as South Court Social, will bring 16 one and two bedroom apartments to Buena Vista, directly across Main Street from the Buena Vista Heritage Museum at 505 East Main St. The ground floor of the three-story complex will host space for commercial businesses. “Our aim is to provide comfort, convenience, and connectivity to the residents and businesses of La Vista,” owner Carol Kelly said. “We recognize that the ability to work remotely has become essential, so we will be ensuring that high-speed internet will be accessible here at the crossroads of the Rockies.”
