A victory for North Carolina transgender students: School records will now list their preferred name

RALEIGH, N.C. Supporters of transgender students are praising a change that will mean North Carolina public schools switch from using the legal name of students to their preferred name. The state Department of Public Instruction notified school districts Friday that it’s updating the PowerSchool student information system to add a preferred name field that will now be used on most records. .

Local governments cautious, deliberate as they craft non-discrimination ordinances

In December a state ban on new local protections including nondiscrimination ordinances for employment and housing was lifted. The ban was a legacy of the  brutal fight over HB 2 and HB 142, the controversial laws that excluded lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from statewide nondiscrimination protections. Since its expiration, six communities have unanimously voted to pass LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, Durham, Greensboro, Orange County. Kendra Johnson, executive director of Equality NC. “We’re very excited that we went from zero percent of the population to seven percent of North Carolina protected almost overnight,” said Kendra Johnson, executive director of Equality NC, in Wednesday’s virtual event. “And we hope that we’ll see many, many more non-discrimination ordinances so people can enjoy access to fair housing, public accommodations and non-discrimination in employment.”

Jenna Franks Purposely Deadnamed by Police After Being Killed She is the ninth trans person believe to be violently killed in 2021.  March 05 2021 8:02 AM EST Investigators in Jacksonville, North Carolina, announced yesterday they now believe a trans woman whose lifeless body was found last month was murdered, but police and local media continue to use the victim’s deadname in public records. The body of Jenna Franks, 34, was found by city workers February 24th in a wooded area adjacent to a ditch they were clearing. GLAAD and friends of Franks called out the Jacksonville Police Department and local media for repeatedly misgendering her in death. Franks is the 9th known transgender victim of violence so far this year in the United States.
