Drinkers urged to support independent brewers when pubs reopen

A campaign is being launched calling on drinkers to support local independent brewers when pubs reopen next week. Around five million pints of cask beer are estimated to have been poured away because of the coronavirus crisis, with the brewers who made it left to foot the bill. Sales of hand-pulled cask beer, which can only be sold in pubs, have been hit hard by Covid restrictions, with sales down 70% over the last year. The Cask Is Back, So Back Cask campaign is backed by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), the British Institute of Innkeeping, and Cask Marque.

Pubs able to serve takeaway drinks when beer gardens reopen from April 12

Pubs will be able to serve takeaway drinks from April 12, Downing Street has confirmed. In a “lifeline” to venues, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s spokesman has said once beer gardens reopen during step two of the road map out of lockdown, Britons will be able to get a takeaway pint. The serving of alcohol to take away has not been permitted since the last national lockdown began. Under previous restrictions, people could continue to buy drinks from pubs even while they were closed.   Speaking on Thursday, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “Outdoor hospitality is permitted so I believe it would be the case that takeaway alcohol will be permitted.”
