U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Monday, that two Rio Grande Valley airports were awarded two federal grants, each totaling $4,735,232 in relief funds following the economic distress caused by the on going COVID-19 pandemic.
Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport and McAllen Miller International Airport received the funding as part of the Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSA) Act, through the U.S. Department of Transportation. As we look to turn the corner on this deadly pandemic, it’s critical that Texas airports are given every resource they need to handle the coming increase in travel, Cornyn said in a press release. In a news release U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville announced that $4.3 million in grant funding has been awarded to several airports located in Texas 34th congressional district by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), on Friday.
The following airports have received funds for COVID-19 relief:
• Valley International Airport: $2,833,427
• The Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport: $1,524,594
• Port Isabel-Cameron County Airport: $13,000
• Weslaco Mid-Valley Airport: $13,000
• Beeville Municipal Airport: $9,000

The city of Brownsville is set to unveil a new 91,000 square-foot terminal at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport at 6 p.m. on Friday.
After over 5 years of planning, funding and constructing the terminal is ready to debut, the city said in a news release.
The unveiling ceremony will stream live on the website www.flybrownsville.com.
Assistant City Manager and Aviation Administrator Bryant Walker says the airport should be busy from dusk till dawn.
