Nearly 100,000 vaccine doses could expire by the fall if they aren t administered. We re hoping to use that supply up rather than see that happen, said Dr. Rick Scott, chairman of Prisma Health s vaccination task force, during a media call on July 28. We wish demand was there.
Prisma Health is the largest not-for-profit health organization in South Carolina. Palmetto Health and the Greenville Health System merged in 2017 to form Prisma Health.
Currently, there are over 1,500 suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19, which were recorded on July 23. The 7-day average in South Carolina is over 1,200 new cases. On the same call, Dr. Helmut Albrecht stated that the Delta variant accounts for nearly all new cases in South Carolina.

Early on in the pandemic, nurses were let go as hospitals were forced to scale back on what treatment and surgeries they could perform.
Now there’s a desperate need to bring those nurses back and area hospitals are hoping large sign-on checks will work.
Nurses were burned out and exhausted and afraid they could easily become infected with COVID-19, so it’s no surprise lots of them quit during the pandemic.
Knowing what they know, would more money convince them to return?

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said recently that the U.S. might be finally turning a corner in the COVID-19 pandemic. It s been a relentless 16 months, and healthcare CIOs and other health IT leaders can no doubt use a breather.
During the course of the past year-plus, these executives have learned many lessons spurred by the manic pacing of the pandemic. Some of them center on the importance of data and analytics, the need for more patient engagement, the requirements of keeping telehealth up to par, and the need to focus technologies on enabling enterprise-wide strategic plans.

Upstate hospitals are at odds over how to handle patients who are treated for opioid overdoses in emergency rooms.
Prisma Health s Greenville Memorial Hospital and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System give patients naloxone, the opioid overdose-reversal drug, as they re being discharged. That s so even if they re not ready to seek recovery from addiction, they have an antidote that could keep them alive if they overdose again.
Bon Secours St. Francis hopes to distribute naloxone in the future, but a spokesperson said the hospital doesn t yet have the proper measures in place.
AnMed Health does not hand out naloxone, and its emergency room director questions the value of doing so.
