Auckland Transport (AT) is currently taking account of the 5817 public submissions received on the draft Regional Land Transport Plan for 2021 – 2031.
The draft RLTP is the 10-year investment plan for Auckland’s transport network. It details the areas that Auckland Transport, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and KiwiRail will focus on to respond to our region’s transport challenges.
While individual feedback is currently being analysed, some key themes are:

Four cyclists were unable to board a ferry in Bayswater due to a lack of space on Tuesday. “When the ferry doesn’t allow these bikes on, you’re pushing people into their cars and to sit in traffic.” Fullers confirmed 10 bikes and three scooters were loaded and four bikes were left behind when the 8.10am Bayswater ferry service sailed. Burgess said the rejected cyclists were left looking “pretty angry and upset”. “You feel for the cyclists, they’re trying their best to commute in a low impact way,” he said. “Our ferries just aren’t set up for it.”
Wood characterised the proposals as starting a “robust national conversation”. “We won’t reach total consensus, but I am calling for a mature conversation, with an eye on a shared future,” he said. A report by officials noted that it can take decades for the country’s light vehicles to be completely replaced, with New Zealanders often holding onto vehicles for a long time.

Transport minister Michael Wood wants the transport sector to be carbon neutral. That poses the challenge of averting New Zealand becoming a dumping ground for petrol and diesel-burning vehicles, as other countries also move to banning them.

Meeting Auckland s goal of halving carbon emissions by 2030 will be tough , but it is achievable, the mayor says. Goff cited the bulk of new housing being inside existing urban limits, major new public transport projects, and the eventual end of the production of petrol and diesel vehicles are key factors. The big part played by transport in Auckland’s carbon footprint means that sector will need to cut emissions by an estimated 64 per cent in the next nine years.

The first serious challenge has been lodged against Auckland’s 10-year transport plan, with Lawyers for Climate Action calling it ‘unlawful’ and vulnerable if a judicial review was sought. The lawyers’ submission to the proposed joint council-government Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) said it falls short of statutory obligations and commitments to halve carbon emissions by 2030. “Instead, it provides for transport emissions to increase 6 per cent by 2031, or at best reduce by 12 per cent if the Government puts in place certain policies,” said the groups president Jenny Cooper QC.
