Rare White Storks spotted in Dalton s Standing Tarn

THREE rare White Storks have been spotted in Dalton. Mesmerised residents who got a glimpse of the bird were left impressed by their beauty as they walked and flew around Standing Tarn. The impressive birds had reportedly been seen on a number of days last week. According to The British List, which includes all 619 species of birds recorded in a wild or apparently wild state in Britain, the White Stork is a former breeder and a scarce visitor to Britain. The British Trust for Ornithology website states that there are just 28 recorded White Stork sightings per year in Britain. The carnivorous White Storks are white-bodied with black feathers on the lower half of their wing, with adults sporting red beaks.

In 2016, he was caught and fitted with a satellite tag which lets scientists track his movements. Like all cuckoos - famed as the harbinger of spring - he spends the winter in the warmth of Africa and migrates to reach Britain in April to breed. The tracker shows that PJ has now arrived in Suffolk, making him a record breaker in the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) project which has seen dozens of cuckoos fitted with tags since 2011. PJ was given a satellite tag in the King s Forest, Suffolk, in 2016 and has since travelled more than 50,000 miles. The bird has repeatedly crossed the Sahara and mountain ranges, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) said. PJ is the first satellite-tagged cuckoo to clock-up 50,000 miles since research began, the BTO said.
