Property tax increases sought in Tigerville, Chanticleer communities

The Tigerville Fire District and the Chanticleer Community Special Tax District a pair of agencies from very different parts of Greenville County  are each seeking to increase their property-tax rates. The Tigerville Fire Department, which serves 7,500 people in a 31-square-mile area of northern Greenville County, has proposed a 53% rate increase that would add $62.80 to the annual property tax bill of a $100,000 home. The department wants to boost the pay of its three fulltime firefighters, hire part-time staff and buy a new fire engine, pumper truck and a $70,000 vehicle for its fire chief. Leaders of the Chanticleer district, which includes about 275 homes in an upscale country club community southeast of the Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital campus, are looking to raise its tax rate for the second consecutive year to cover the costs for a fulltime deputy who patrols the neighborhood.

Some SC hospitals won t give out naloxone even as opioid deaths rise

Upstate hospitals are at odds over how to handle patients who are treated for opioid overdoses in emergency rooms. Prisma Health s Greenville Memorial Hospital and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System give patients naloxone, the opioid overdose-reversal drug, as they re being discharged. That s so even if they re not ready to seek recovery from addiction, they have an antidote that could keep them alive if they overdose again. Bon Secours St. Francis hopes to distribute naloxone in the future, but a spokesperson said the hospital doesn t yet have the proper measures in place. AnMed Health does not hand out naloxone, and its emergency room director questions the value of doing so.
