PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) With a primary election just over three months away, we re getting a clearer picture of who is vying for a spot on the ballot in the race for Philadelphia district attorney.
On Monday Chuck Peruto, a criminal defense attorney famous for representing high-profile clients such as reputed mob boss Joey Merlino and convicted serial murderer Gary Heidnik, announced he d be running for Philadelphia District Attorney as a Republican candidate.
Peruto has been alluding to the possibility since last spring and says he is running on a law and order platform.
Peruto will run as a Republican in a city where registered Democrats outnumber GOP voters by nearly 8-to-1. He said the Republican Party endorsed him over the weekend, but the party s leadership was not present at his announcement Tuesday and has not issued a statement showing Peruto support.

A California court is scheduled to hear a lawsuit Tuesday filed by the Association of Deputy District Attorneys in Los Angeles against District Attorney George Gascon. The suit accuses Mr. Gascon of illegally blocking prosecutors from pursuing enhanced sentencing in violent crimes and other major criminal cases.
