Association demands immediate appointment of regulatory authority for cement and steel industry
The Builders’ Association of India (BAI), which represents the construction and building industry, on Friday staged a nationwide protest to attract the attention of the government towards the steep price hike by cement and steel companies.
They demanded immediate appointment of a regulatory authority for the cement and steel industry to curb what they call “ill and unethical practices”, which adversely impact the common man.
Spat between builders, cement makers ramps up over price hike
SICMA has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to “look into profiteering being done by builders”.

NEW DELHI: The tussle between manufacturers of construction inputs such as cement and steel and builders is intensifying, with both sides trading charges of faulty trade practices. Condemning the proposed strike by Builders Association of India (BAI) on February 12, the South India Cement Manufacturers Association (SICMA) alleged that builders were spreading “misinformation” on cement prices to take advantage of the economic recovery and increase real estate prices, which are already at unaffordable levels.

Allege cartelisation by cement, steel players for steep price hike of raw material Real estate developers’ and contractors’ bodies have announced a day-long strike on Friday across the country to protest against the alleged “artificial price hike of raw materials” including steel and cement.
Representatives of Builders Association of India (BAI), Gujarat Chapter accompanied by the State chapters of Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India, , Contractor Association, Gujarat Institute of Housing and Estate Developers and Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India) Ahmedabad Centre met on February 11 to announce a strike on February 12.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of BAI, CREDAI, NAREDCO, SABCA and Workers’ Associations will stage a protest near Metropolitan Hotel here on Friday, demanding that the State and Central governments take necessary steps to establish a regulatory authority for steel and cement sectors.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, JAC representatives said that constituting a cement regulatory authority for the sector would curb cartelisation and ‘undue profiteering’ by manufacturers.
