LOCKDOWN 3.0 National response to outbreaks long overdue Jewel Topsfield’s article (“Mixed feelings as Victorians tackle the third lockdown”, 15/2) was testimony to the fact that our state government appears to know of only one way to manage risk: by shutting down everywhere and hoping for the best. It is profoundly lazy, lacks nuance and is essentially an admission of failure. Unlike NSW, which in December at 30 new cases in a day still did not feel the need to crush livelihoods by imposing a statewide lockdown, the Victorian approach is akin to solving a domestic rat problem by bulldozing the whole house.

Many of us have made the same mistakes as Eddie McGuire

McGUIRE RESIGNATION The way Eddie McGuire reacted to the Collingwood racism review report should have been an “ah-ha” moment to Australia. Because this is the way we have been handling racism for years. McGuire was just doing what we all have done. I honestly feel the club and McGuire are probably sincere about trying to deal with it but have truly not understood the reality of “walking in other’s shoes”. This is a great challenge for all of us.

Lightbulb moment on gay conversion laws fails to match a real need

Lightbulb moment on gay conversion laws fails to match a real need February 3, 2021 — 10.00pm Save Normal text size The Age, email letters@theage.com.au. Please include your home address and telephone number. GAY CONVERSION LAWS There’s an old joke among therapists. How many therapists does it take to change a light bulb? None, because the lightbulb has to want to change itself. The truth contained within this joke is patients are often motivated by wanting to change aspects of themselves or understand themselves better. When it comes to sexual orientation or gender identity, which are two very different areas and should not be conflated, many people of course have no need for a therapist because indeed nothing requires fixing, but it is not true for all. There are patients who seek counselling because they may be conflicted or confused or uneasy about certain feelings or thoughts of themselves.
