(WTVM) - The CDC says that approximately 25% of Americans have a fear of needles, but that should not stop you from getting the COVID-19 vaccine, so one Piedmont Columbus Regional doctor has some helpful advice. Dr. Darryl Ellis, M.D., a PCR family medicine physician, say trypanophobia, a fear of medical procedures involving needles, is incredibly common. He also says that the process of vaccinating Americans against COVID-19 in order to bring the pandemic to a halt can be a source of even more anxiety during an already stressful time to those with trypanophobia.

(WTVM) - A death investigation is underway after a suspect died in Columbus police custody. Jerrel Ellis died at Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital Monday, shortly after being transported there by police. According to the Columbus Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 5000 block of Aaron Lane Sunday night in reference to Ellis discharging a firearm multiple times inside of a residence. Upon arrival to the scene, a neighbor told officers that Ellis forcefully entered his residence, also on Aaron Lane.

(WTVM) - Columbus police are currently investigating three shootings that took place in Columbus Monday and into the early morning hours of Tuesday. The first took place at Avalon Apartments on Cusseta Rd. A man reported that he was standing on his second floor balcony when an unknown person fired multiple shots at him from the sidewalk. He suffered a graze wound, but was treated and released on scene. He was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional by a passerby for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. His current condition is unknown.

Piedmont Fayette Hospital’s patient experience team has implemented a “Meet My Loved One” project that enables staff to make a personal connection with Critical Care and Covid-19 patients. “Meet My Loved One” started at UAB at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and was adapted by North Mississippi Medical Center where it was named a 2020 Leading Innovator by Press Ganey. Each day, the patient experience team reviews new Critical Care and Covid admissions and they call the patient’s identified emergency contact to get more personal information about the patient. They put the information on a form, which also allows the team to identify important aspects of the patient’s life that the family believes to be important, as well as caregiving tips.
