(First published June, 2021) Part of this included staffing hospitals according to the care capacity demand programme, software which helps hospitals better set safe staffing levels, and variable response management which ensures there are enough clinicians on shift should workload pressures increase. All 20 boards were supposed to have started using the programme by June 30, but only 10 have. It also included the pay equity claim which aimed to address sex-based pay discrimination, while the pay offer would lift base pay-rates by $1800 a year and a lump sum payment of $1200. Members were generally happy with the pay-aspect of the rejected deal, but were unconvinced it addressed safe staffing issues.

The DHBs have responded saying they will reach out to NZNO tomorrow morning, but has warned the union it needs to engage “in a meaningful way” NZNO lead advocate David Wait said DHBs had made promising moves on pay, but the offer contained too many ambiguities.

The union said it was committed to carrying on bargaining with the DHBs – and expected them to do the same.
