After 13 air crew broke quarantine, Sydney health officials will now police-monitor working flight attendants Shannon McMahon, The Washington Post Dec. 22, 2020 FacebookTwitterEmail Officials in Australia have tightened self-quarantine requirements for airline crew members in the country between flights, now requiring that they stay only at police-monitored quarantine facilities. Sydney s Swelling Covid Outbreak Risks Scuppering Christmas

Sydney’s Swelling Covid Outbreak Risks Scuppering Christmas Bloomberg 21/12/2020 (Bloomberg) Sydney’s 5 million residents are being urged to curb activities over the next few days to avoid fanning a coronavirus outbreak that’s closed state borders and threatens to scupper Christmas festivities. A new health order from Monday limits gatherings in homes and entertainment venues across metropolitan Sydney for at least three days, while New South Wales state health officials work to trace the source and contain a growing cluster involving 83 people. “We’re on a precipice,” said Marylouise McLaws, professor of epidemiology, hospital infection and infectious diseases control at the University of New South Wales. A seven-day, Sydney-wide “stay at home” order may be necessary to arrest the spread of the virus, and it would be prudent for residents to curtail holiday festivities if not cancel them altogether, she said.

With news of a new strain of the Covid-19 virus spreading in the UK, it looks like Australia’s Christmas plans are also up in the air with a new cluster of cases in Sydney. It’s a good reminder to us here in New Zealand that we mustn’t get complacent over the holiday season. On Tuesday December 15, Covid-19 minister Chris Hipkins and director general of health Ashley Bloomfield held a media stand-up to talk about the government’s Covid summer resurgence plan. The plan lays out how they will manage any community cases that emerge in New Zealand over our summer holiday season.
