WATERBURY If it weren’t for Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries, Yaitza Pena said, she’d have no other way to provide for her 9-year-old daughter, Angenid, for Christmas.
On Tuesday, her daughter picked up a new toy – a doll – and she picked up Christmas dinner from GWIM.
The charity is one of several offering meals and more to the desperately poor during the holiday season, and taking safety precautions because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
“We normally over at the YMCA gym… have hundreds of children and parents, and Santa,” GWIM Executive Director Barbara Ann Dublin said. “This year it’s appointment only. We make the food pantry as festive as possible to reinforce the holiday spirit for children. We’re providing takeout hams and turkeys and canned goods for the families, along with gifts for the children.”

Coronavirus: Joseph Assignment Global Initiative provides relief to three basic schools
As further evidence of its commitment to the wellbeing of persons, particularly children in the communities where it operates, the Joseph Assignment Global Initiative has made donations of COVID-19 relief items, in the form of food, to more than a thousand children in three basic schools in the Asikuma/Odoben district of the Central Region.
The recipients - New Faith Baptist Church International Christian Academy in Asabiem, Amanbeti and Bisease - were built by the Joseph Assignment Global Initiative, the charitable arm of New Faith Baptist Church, Illinois, between 2008 and 2012, in response to the lack of schools in the underdeveloped district.

A box of food delivered by the Sanneh Foundation awaits a family in St. Paul. The foundation, started by Tony Sanneh, a former Major League Soccer player, works with 10,000 kids a year with soccer and other activities. After COVID-19 struck, the foundation began providing free meals to families in need.
