In-depth: Support grows for home delivery of alcohol in bill that aims to change regulatory laws

Tommy Lopez, Patrick Hayes Created: January 22, 2021 09:43 PM ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- There could soon be another way to get alcohol in New Mexico. Home delivery has been discussed for years, and now those leading the renewed charge are confident the changes will become law this year. Bills in the state legislature expected to be taken up this session also include dramatically lowering licensing costs for restaurants that want to serve liquor. The proposed changes are meant to help people and many of the state’s businesses that are struggling during the pandemic. ALCOHOL DELIVERY The types of businesses that would be able to deliver alcohol include grocery stores, liquor stores, breweries, wineries, craft distilleries, and restaurants. Although, restaurants would be unable to deliver liquor.

Lawmakers prefile two paid sick leave bills ahead of legislative session

Created: January 18, 2021 09:52 PM ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  Workers across our state could soon have access to paid sick leave. Two different pieces of pre-filed legislation aim to tackle the issue during the 60-day session, which kicks off Tuesday. If passed, those bills would require businesses to allow employees to accrue that time off. Paid sick leave is something that the city of Albuquerque has been trying to address for years. However, these bills would have the power to impact the entire state.  A sponsor for House Bill 37 said the pandemic has only made this more of a necessity, but some businesses are afraid this could be the final straw.

$100M NM business grant program flooded with applicants

ALBUQUERQUE - More than 6,500 hard-hit New Mexico businesses and nonprofits are receiving an extra Christmas present: up to $50,000 in grant funding from the government. However, because of a higher-than-expected number of applications for the program set up by the state using federal funding less than half of the organizations that applied will receive a grant. The number (of applications) that we couldn t fund was very hard for us, said Marquita Russel, CEO of the New Mexico Finance Authority, the state agency that administered the program. The Small Business CARES Relief Grants program was part of a larger $320 million pandemic aid package passed by state lawmakers during the recent special session.
