(Eddie Moore/Journal) SANTA FE – The battle over paid sick leave for New Mexico private sector employees took a new twist Monday, with backers agreeing to delay the effective date of a mandatory leave bill until July 2022. The pushed-back implementation date, which the bill s sponsor said was chosen with input from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham s office, frustrated some bill supporters and did not win over business groups that have strongly opposed the measure.

New Mexico will not follow Texas; Mask mandate to remain in place

Created: March 02, 2021 09:48 PM ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- New Mexico will not be following Texas lead. State officials said the mask mandate will continue, and reopenings will be based on the Red to Green Framework for reopening. The New Mexico Department of Health insists science will guide decisions.  Matt Bieber, director of communications for the New Mexico Department of Health, said Texas could impact other states. This isn t a decision that states really get to make in isolation. Obviously they have the authority to do so. But it s really best when they can consider the fates of their neighbors, and we are obviously concerned that this will have an impact on case rates and worse here in our state, Bieber said.
