Births of critically endangered bongo calves celebrated at Florida zoo Peter Sblendorio
Jacksonville Zoo officials are thrilled by the recent births of two eastern bongo calves, adding to the population of a critically endangered species.
The newborns arrived on Dec. 17 and Jan. 8, officials with the zoo in Florida announced Thursday.
“Our animal care team is very excited with how well the first-time mothers are doing,” Corey Neatrour, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens’ assistant curator of mammals, said in a statement.
“This is great news for our herd and we look forward to more offspring in the future to enhance conservation efforts for this species.”
