Investors drop nice-guy role on climate change laggards

Institutional investors and others are using new tactics to push oil and gas companies to get serious about climate change.
Traditional shareholder methods of getting energy companies attention, like shareholder resolutions or corporate engagement, will not be enough to meet the Paris Agreement goal of bringing greenhouse gas emissions to zero within the second half of the 21st century, investors say.
One of the most dramatic steps came Dec. 9, with New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli s announcement that the $226 billion New York State Common Retirement Fund, Albany, will divest from the riskiest oil and gas companies by 2025 and decarbonize the entire portfolio by 2040.

Former Democratic presidential nominee Andrew Yang may have plans to run for New York City mayor.
The
New York Times reported on Dec. 11 that Yang is planning to announce his intention next week. It was also reported that Yang is planning meetings with city leaders. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Yang have already met, and Yang is planning on meeting Al Sharpton next week.
Yang, a former lawyer and entrepreneur, was born in upstate New York, was one of the more progressive candidates during the presidential primary. Yang pushed universal basic income, Medicare for all, and that every cop in the country should be outfitted with a body camera.

The field of candidates running for New York City mayor is more or less set, as the June 22 Democratic primary approaches. It’s been a bumpy road to get here. High-profile politicians like Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., former Rep. Max Rose and New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson all thought about running to succeed Mayor Bill de Blasio before deciding against it. Others, like former New York City Veterans Services Commissioner Loree Sutton were fully in the race, before dropping out.
But out of the crowded field of more than four dozen official candidates, some are standing out. Here are some fast facts about the likely 2021 New York City contenders, in alphabetical order.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. About a month after losing his Congressional re-election bid, Max Rose (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) started a mayoral campaign account Thursday, records from the New York City Campaign Finance Board show.
Rose did not officially announce a run for the office. Efforts to reach Rose’s office were unsuccessful Thursday night.
Rose took to Twitter, telling his followers to “stay tuned.”
