Lawmakers give final approval to gun bill, sending it to governor s desk

Lawmakers give final approval to gun bill, sending it to governor’s desk Updated May 05, 2021; Facebook Share A bill to require gun owners to safely store their firearms and to allow schools, colleges and universities and other sensitive public buildings to ban guns is on its way to Gov. Kate Brown, after the Oregon Senate approved it on a 17-7 vote Wednesday. Senate Bill 554 is this session’s most high-profile gun legislation. While it was the subject of an hours-long debate in the House, the Senate’s discussion was relatively brief. Six senators were not present. “The vast majority of gun owners in this state are not going to be directly impacted by this,” said Sen. Floyd Prozanski, D-Eugene, responding to criticisms that the bill would keep gun owners from being able to defend themselves. “Most gun owners are very reasonable and understand those weapons are deadly, and they do in fact need to make certain they are safely secure.”

Asphalt, Gridlock and Common Sense

Asphalt, Gridlock and Common Sense It’s clear that adding lanes to urban expressways or building new ones doesn’t reduce congestion. Sometimes it makes things worse. So why do we keep doing it? May 4, 2021 •  (Shutterstock)Sometimes in government, the best-laid strategies of policymakers and consultants are much less rational than ordinary common sense. Nearly everyone in America believes, correctly, that workers shouldn’t be yoked to their employers for health insurance, even though we can’t seem to change that. Nearly all of us can see that our zoning laws are a hodgepodge of outdated rules that ban mixed uses in neighborhoods badly in need of them. I could make a much longer list.

Buy Less, Live More

Buy Less, Live More Share The minimalist movement celebrates experiences rather than things. We can all take part by decluttering and simplifying. “The bigger your garage, the more you fill it with stuff.” A knowing observation from the guy on a neighbouring stool as the crowd around us watches sports on big-screen TVs. It may not be the usual scene for such a philosophical discussion. Or perhaps it’s the perfect indication that people from every slice of society, from barflies to celebrities, are aware of our cultural obsession with accumulation. Quality over quantity For those who want to do more than philosophize reportedly including actor Robert Pattinson and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg there is minimalist living.

Opinion: Tim Scott s rebuttal to Joe Biden was fatally flawed

Opinion: Tim Scott s rebuttal to Joe Biden was fatally flawed CNN 2 hrs ago © Pool Wednesday night, President Joe Biden delivered his first address before a joint session of Congress a speech full of optimism, policy priorities and an expansive vision for the future. I wasn t surprised that the Republican Party chose to put South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott forward for their rebuttal in this case, 15 minutes of dissembling in the service of an obvious plea to voters who do not look like him. One of the main requirements for today s Black Republicans appears to be the tricky logic of downplaying racism while simultaneously playing the race card. Scott was clearly ready to perform that number last night. He quickly went viral for his rebuttal to Biden, saying: I get called Uncle Tom and the N-word by progressives ! Minutes later he added, Hear me clearly: America is not a racist country.
