NYSUT backs new COVID guidelines for schools

Where school districts stand on plans to bring kids back

Created: April 10, 2021 06:33 PM ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) Rochester-area school districts are once again in planning mode as they prepare to bring students back for in-person instruction five days a week.  New York State released new guidance for schools on Friday that aligns with CDC guidance saying three feet is enough for social distancing as long as the community transmission rate is low.  On Saturday, the 7-day-average positivity rate in Monroe County was at 3.0%, which is still considered high by CDC metrics. School districts are now in a holding pattern, waiting to see if the transmission rate will drop in time to get kids back in the classroom before the end of the school year.

The guidance was first recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March. The new rule takes barriers away, but masks will still be mandated at all times for everyone. All students in counties with low, moderate and substantial risk of transmission are allowed to be 3 feet apart in the classroom. In counties with high risk of transmission, elementary students can still have 3 feet of separation, but middle and high schoolers will have to go back to 6 feet if they are not able to be in pods, which are groups of students who are with each other throughout the day.

New York State United Teachers remind parents of option to opt-out of assessments

State assessments will be administered starting this month, but the New York State United Teachers union has started a campaign to spread the word that parents can opt not to have their children take the assessments. “This year has tested our kids enough. Parents: Know your rights to opt your kids out of the state tests,” the union campaign says. Only Section 1 of the Math and English Language Arts assessments for grades three through eight will be administered rather than two sessions, and only the written test component of the grades four and eight Science assessments will be administered. The grades three through eight English Language Arts assessment is scheduled to be administered from April 19 to 29, and the grades three through eight Mathematics assessment is scheduled to be administered from May 3 to 14. The grade four and eight Science assessment is scheduled to be administered from June 7 to 11.
